A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME

Serge LeBlanc, Ph.D.

PHYSICIST & DATA SCIENTIST

My career began in the eastern Canadian city of Moncton, New-Brunswick. After graduating from a B.Sc. in physics I joined Evident Technologies, a startup focused on quantum dot semiconductor technology.

A year later I moved to Ottawa, Ontario to join another startup called Brightwell Technologies as their 2nd employee, where I helped build the company’s Micro-Flow Imaging platform for particle size distribution measurement. Brightwell Technologies was later acquired by Cell Biosciences.

After leaving Brightwell I went back to school and earned a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Ottawa. After graduating I moved to the San Francisco Bay Area where I transitioned into the field of data science.

In 2013 I joined the nutrition startup MyFitnessPal as their first data scientist where I worked with the largest database of human eating habits in the world. MyFitnessPal was acquired by Under Armour in 2015, and is now part of Under Armour Connected Fitness, the world’s largest health and fitness community dedicated to helping people lead a healthier life.

When I’m not querying databases or analyzing data, I enjoy discovering the amazing hiking trials in the Bay Area, and playing golf.

WHAT I DO

Data Science, Product Analytics

Data science has been described as both an art and a science, but ultimately I think it’s about using data to tell a story.

As an expert in product analytics, I use the tools and techniques of data science to help inform product decisions.

What feature should we build next? What should we charge for our product? What has the biggest impact on user engagement? Should we focus efforts on growth, engagement or revenue? What personalized recommendation can we provide that will benefit our users? Can we predict if and when a user will take a particular action?

These are the kinds of questions that data science can answer.
